100 Years after Balfour
On 2 November 1917, a letter from the Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour was transmitted to the Zionist Federation, promising British support for ‘a national home for the Jewish people’ in Palestine. One hundred years on, this film spells out the troubling legacy of that historic letter. Here, seven leading Jewish thinkers and activists challenge the notion that this year’s centenary is a cause for celebration, given the grave consequences of the document, for Palestinians above all.
